Marvel's New Deadpool and Wolverine Trailer: A Breakdown of Cameos, Easter Eggs, and Fourth Wall Breaks

Marvel released a brand new One-minute-long preview, of Deadpool and Wolverine Trailer. A lot is going on, many more cameos, easter eggs in the background and there is a bunch of fourth wall breaks. We finally saw, the original Tyler Mane version of Sabretooth from the X-Men 2000 movie. Let's analyze the new one-minute trailer and discover the new features that MCU's latest trailers provide.

Deadpool’s Fourth Wall Breaks and the Return of Sabretooth: A Reunion and a Letdown?

I love the way Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, saying people have been waiting for this fight forever. He then humorously advises Wolverine on how to fight Sabretooth, making it sound almost like he’s giving advice for a sex scene. "Ground and pound"—what? Deadpool's advice is very much in line with his character’s irreverent tone.

Liev Schreiber's version of Sabretooth is also going to have a cameo scene in the movie, indicating there will be multiple versions of Sabretooth. This idea was humorously referenced during a real-life pandemic video chat between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, where they joked about X-Men Origins: Wolverine. When their conversation fell apart, Liev Schreiber's version of Sabretooth quipped, "Ooh, it's just you and me, Logan." This makes it feel like a reunion for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I believe Liev Schreiber is supposed to have some kind of cameo scene, but it’s not clear what his role will be. The primary focus seems to be on hyping up Tyler Mane's original version of Sabretooth. In one scene, you see Tyler Mane's Sabretooth jump down, briefly reprising his character. From the footage, we know how the fight between Sabretooth and Wolverine unfolds, but there’s a concern that the long-awaited fight will end quickly with Wolverine victorious. Deadpool hypes up the fight and pauses the movie, but he might be disappointed with how it concludes.

Timeline Chaos: Deadpool's Nexus Event and the Return of Shatter Star

The trailer begins with familiar footage of Deadpool trying to convince Wolverine to help him, warning that his world will be destroyed if he doesn’t. There are many theories about why this is happening. One idea is that the TVA is threatening to prune Deadpool’s reality because he caused a Nexus event with Cable’s time-travel device, which messed with the timelines. This could explain why Shatterstar is alive again, as most of the X-Force team died in Deadpool 2.

It appears that Deadpool used Cable’s device to bring back Shatterstar and change other things in his reality. The reality Deadpool comes from at the start of the movie is intended to be the main X-Men movie timeline, making him canon in the X-Men universe. This plays into the movie’s meta aspect, with Deadpool mocking Kevin Feige, Disney, and Marvel Studios for recasting all the X-Men actors for the upcoming MCU reboot.

Eventually, all the classic X-Men movies will become completely irrelevant, "pruned" like the TVA prunes timelines in the Loki series, sending them to the void. This is humorously depicted by the pruned 20th Century Fox logo, a joke about Disney buying Fox and rendering it a fraction of its former self, even though Fox technically still releases movies under Disney.

In the same scene, we see Ant-Man's entire dead body in the void. It's unclear when he died, leading to many theories. Perhaps it happened during the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, in a timeline where Ant-Man died in giant form. Alternatively, he could have died in giant form during Ant-Man and The Wasp, as we have seen him transform into giant form a few times.

Cassandra Nova’s Telepathic Power: Controlling Alioth and Unveiling TVA Secrets

The new trailer suggests that Cassandra Nova utilizes her telepathic abilities, alongside other powers, in the movie. She has acquired powerful artifacts that were pruned and sent to the void. In the comics, she is depicted as Professor X's twin. In the film, it may be explained that she was born his twin in a TVA timeline, which was deemed a Nexus event and led to her being pruned.

I favor the theory that she controls Alioth using her telepathy, as this is one of Alioth's weaknesses. Loki and Sylvie were also able to briefly manipulate Alioth, indicating that despite its ability to consume entire realities and timelines, Alioth has vulnerabilities.

Deadpool's Midlife Crisis: From Superhero Retirement to Used Car Salesmanship

As the film begins, Peter and others surprise him with a party featuring a cake. There's a new scene depicting them at a used car dealership where Deadpool starts working at the movie's outset. Within the movie's context, it's been a couple of years since the events of Deadpool 2, echoing the real-world gap since the last Deadpool film. Deadpool is going through a midlife crisis, having retired from superheroics because he feels redundant. This meta-commentary also plays on Disney's acquisition of Fox and Marvel's rebooting of X-Men characters, making the previous Fox-Marvel characters appear obsolete. Deadpool begins the film as a character from the Fox-Marvel universe, suggesting Disney might recast these roles. Thus, Deadpool takes a job at the dealership with Peter to make ends meet.

Earlier this year, the first nine minutes of the movie were unveiled at CinemaCon, showing Deadpool at the dealership, delivering his trademark fourth-wall-breaking jokes and saying things typically taboo in films. We also witness them preparing to battle in front of the 20th Century Fox logo.

The Campfire Revelation: Deadpool's Denial of Heroism and Cassandra Nova's Manipulation

Then there's a separate scene around a campfire where Deadpool declares he's no hero. There have been various theories about this scene with Wolverine. I believe Cassandra Nova is manipulating Wolverine's mind, causing him to relive traumatic memories. This isn't occurring within the movie's narrative but inside Wolverine's own thoughts. Many are speculating about the purpose of the graves shown in the scene. I think these graves symbolize the dead X-Men from his team, representing those he feels he has failed.

There's a humorous moment where Deadpool pops his claws after being captured by Cassandra Nova's evil band of X-Men variants. It seems like he may have cut off the tip of his finger, but Deadpool quickly regenerates.

Following this, we witness the thrilling Wolverine versus Sabretooth fight. This happens after their initial confrontation, where they are seen fighting in front of the 20th Century Fox logo. Their battle is interrupted by Cassandra Nova's X-Men, who arrive to capture them.

Easter Eggs Galore: Decoding Clues from the Wrecked 20th Century Fox Logo and Moon Knight Cupcake Truck ki

There's a significant standoff scene, followed by Deadpool pausing the movie—an impressive display of breaking the fourth wall. This ability hints at his immense power, as characters who can affect the film itself are arguably the most potent in storytelling. While the background is rich with Easter eggs like the wrecked 20th Century Fox logo and the Moon Knight cupcake truck, questions linger about the Nexus event that led to their pruning and the void. A submarine-like ship wreckage and Red Skull's car, now resembling Iron Man's from the first film, spark theories about their origins and significance. Notably, Pyro or one of his variants is seen driving it.

Canadian Pride and Easter Eggs: The Toronto Needle and Wolverine's Roots

The Toronto Needle is prominently featured, a nod to Ryan Reynolds' Canadian roots and the film's setting. Expect more Canadian Easter eggs, fitting for Wolverine's origins. Noticeably, Wolverine nonchalantly sports Deadpool's Adam and Tim's swords before their fight, prompting Deadpool to humorously remove them, preparing for the battle. The music cues during the Wolverine versus Sabretooth fight, echoing old-school basketball match hype, evoke nostalgia. This callback extends to the long-awaited battle since the original X-Men (2000) film, where Tyler Mane's Sabretooth made an appearance but never faced off significantly with Wolverine.

Deadpool's advice for the fight is typically quirky: "A baby knife. Shoot the devil. You take downside control, then full mount, ground and pound until he's silent—because he's dead." This sets the tone for the diverse matchups anticipated in the film.

Cassandra Nova's Comic Book Inspiration: "E is for Extinction" Influence

Additional scenes released online include a closer look at Cassandra Nova's costume, inspired by the "E is for Extinction" storyline in the comics. Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Cassandra Nova's presence ties into their extensive comic book work, referenced in James Gunn's Superman movie and beyond.
